Mormon Wellness Project: 024: The Mormon Church Apology Hoax and and My New Essay

Before the Mormon Apology Hoax Wendy was getting her podcast ready which included her own “fake” apology. With the approaching anniversary of the 1978 revelation ending race restrictions in the church, Wendy offers a “new essay” for a new day. Though partly tongue in cheek, this new essay cuts through the murkiness surrounding the church’s attempts to explain its past record on the priesthood ban. Here is a paragraph from her essay:

The truth is, forget all the stuff we said before, again. We absolutely DO know why the church ban existed. It existed because our leaders in the past weren’t discerning enough to separate weird, evil, racist stuff in the world from what the scriptures actually say, that “all are alike unto God”. We want to clean up the mess we made over all these years by holding to racist beliefs and blaming it on an inscrutable God all the way till 2018. Instead we should have just admitted the obvious. They leaders were racist in the past and we covered for them. We did this because they were prophets, and we are prophets too, so we were afraid if you stopped believing in the divine role of prophets in the past, you’d stop believing in us…

  1. Very good! We knew that the church apology was a fake because President Oaks said, “the Church does not apologize.” Well, maybe until the church finally apologizes, for not apologizing, and not repenting, with probably just a little bit too much pride?

  2. Some are saying that NOW the church can never, ever apologize because that would be like giving in to pressure. I don’t think so, I think we are kidding ourselves if we think they are going to apologize. If they were going to apologize they had the perfect chance to do so at the NAACP deal, and they wouldn’t have published that article in the Ensign (future podcast).
It’s up to the members to do this job and there is some poetry in that I think. Upcoming events shall reveal all, both from progressive community and the church. can’t wait till June ! celebration! If I were them I’d cancel the whole thing but they can’t now!! its all so beautiful! or maybe its just my mood right now…thanks Tom

  3. Interesting… were all the progressive voices of the past correct? And are all the progressive voices of the present correct too?
